ICANN, the guys who control what domain extensions (such as .com, .net, etc) are used and what aren’t have announced they are going to approve .xxx domains. There is of course a backlash; people have called it obscene, morally wrong and so on. Although one way I would describe it – stupid.
The stupidity is aimed squarely at any webmaster that actually uses it. As a webmaster I have an insight into the situation and I have to say, the Encorian equivalent of Hell will have to freeze over before I use an xxx domain even for a porn site.
Why? Because the minute those domains are active, probably even before in some cases, every network administrator, workplace, school possibly even internet café, ISP security controls, pretty much everyone who runs a network is going to outright block the .xxx domains.
Any site using that extension is going to find itself blocked and that is most of the traffic gone from your site. It’s not just webmasters that find themselves hit though. You the surfers too will feel it.
After all the blocks are going to be blocking us from looking at the content we want. The creation of this extension seems at first glance to be a step forward for the adult industry but in my opinion it’s just going to cause more censorship. Which is not good for us.
